Configuring Intel AMT KVM for standard VNC port 5900 use from Linux

I recently built a server to use for experimenting with virtual machines and such, I saw that intel has created motherboards with a built in KVM service which is part of their Intel AMT feature for vPro chips.

Once I was done building it I discovered that by default it is set up in in a special mode where the only way to use it is with a copy of RealVNC for $100 or more.

After some digging I discovered that it is possible to enable a standard VNC on port 5900 using standard password authentication. The problem was, that you needed to sift through intel's AMT SDK and find the appropriate windows only program to configure it. There is also linux drivers for AMT, but after wrangling them and making them compile, the interface was hard to use and not very well documented.

Then I discovered that AMT uses the WS-Management protocol to configure settings, luckily enough there is an open source tool to use this protocol called openwsman available at http://sourceforge.net/projects/openwsman/ (you will need the openwsman and wsmancli downloads)

the command line tool may be available in your linux distro as a package called wsmancli, which is all you really need.

To configure standard VNC you will need to do the following

Enable the AMT extensions also known as MEi in your BIOS, you will need to set a username and password for AMT, and enable the remote management feature
Install wsmancli and run the following commands:

wsman put http://intel.com/wbem/wscim/1/ips-schema/1/IPS_KVMRedirectionSettingData -h localhost -P 16992 -u <AMT User> -p <AMT Password> -k RFBPassword=<VNC Password>

wsman put http://intel.com/wbem/wscim/1/ips-schema/1/IPS_KVMRedirectionSettingData -h localhost -P 16992 -u <AMT User> -p <AMT Password> -k Is5900PortEnabled=true

wsman invoke -a RequestStateChange http://schemas.dmtf.org/wbem/wscim/1/cim-schema/2/CIM_KVMRedirectionSAP -h localhost -P 16992 -u <AMT User> -p <AMT Password> -k RequestedState=2

You must configure the password before enabling port 5900

AMT User and AMT Password are the details set up in the bios, the default username is admin

VNC Password must contain exactly 8 characters, including upper and lower case, numbers and special characters.

This was run on the installed system, hence the localhost for the hostname, if you are running it remotely, just substitute the address of your AMT system.

I have noticed that apple's built in VNC viewer does not work with AMT, and chicken of the VNC is also unreliable.
